Do people still get attached to them? I can remember when I was growing up that we use to name our cars and my dad would dedicate a day every few months to tinker under the hood to clean and tune the engine and do other maintenance bits and pieces. When someone got a new car in the neighbourhood – It was a big deal and everyone wanted to see the new car!! These days cars are no longer treated like family members (I can remember my dad coaxing our car to get up a steep hill when we were towing a trailer and we all cheered when “Bess” made it to the top. A car was made to last and you kept them for many years. These days’ cars are a usually commodity – All repairs are done by a mechanic and they are replaced when things start to go wrong
In parts of Australia you are even penalised for having an older auto – In NSW and the ACT, It is compulsory for cars older than 5 years to undergo a yearly roadworthy so the registration can be renewed.
Each year you know that you will have a mechanical expense that cannot be avoided if you wish to keep driving your older car.In other states it is only when a car is bought and sold that the vehicle undergoes an inspection. My car was 17 years old and it had been a great car but I knew that there were some major repair milestones on the horizon.
The major repairs that I knew were coming up were: 4 new tyres which would set me back $1000. A new transmission – These usually need an overhaul or replacement at around 300,000 kms and I was up to 280,000 kms. I had also noticed something “leaking” on the garage floor. It was also time for registration renewal in 3 months’ time – another $600 I was going to have to find.
Was it worth it for me to keep my old faithful??
If I was going to sell it – I would need to get a roadworthy or safety certificate for the car – With the car needing new tyres and new registration I knew I was already up to $2000 in costs and at a bare minimum it was worth only $3000 – I had looked up its value on the blue book site and it had made me sob when I saw how worthless it was. I was not prepared to try and sell as knowing my luck the safety certificate would find what was causing the leak and that would need to be replaced meaning it would actually cost me more to have it is sellable condition than what I would get in return
Maybe it was time to get a new car??
I knew that this time of year the car dealerships would be having run out sales for the newer car models on the way and that they will always have an incentive for a trade in vehicle, so I went to all the websites and sure enough I found a deal that was worth going for.
I spoke to a mechanic friend of mine and mentioned what car I was looking at buying and he mentioned that he had bought his wife the same make and model earlier that year and they were really happy with the purchase.
Everything was pointing towards buying a new car and the relief knowing that I was not going to have to get the repairs done or worry about the up and coming registration was huge. Also knowing that I was able to trade my worthless car in and not have to scrap my car (which was going to cost me $300!!) A friend of mine had to get their car scrapped and was astounded when they had to pay for it. Old car getting scrapped.I found the Youtube clip above really informative and went in armed with how I was going to negotiate and found a dealership with the car I wanted in stock and I arranged finance though a car broker friend. It was new car time for me.
